Space Pirate Captain Harlock Captain Harlock Production Cel with Matching Animation Drawing (Toei Animation, c. 1978-79). The titular Captain Harlock takes the spotlight in this beautiful hand-painted production cel with matching graphite and color pencil animation drawing from the 1978-79 animated series. The manga was created only a year earlier by well-known manga artist Leiji Matsumoto (1938 - 2023) and followed Harlock and his crew as they rebelled against the Earth's government. This iconic character influenced the creation of other memorable characters like Tuxedo Mask from Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon and Black Jack from the manga series of the same name by Osamu Tezuka (1928 - 1989). Captain Harlock measures roughly 4.25'' x 6.25'' with the animation drawing roughly .5'' longer. Both are unnumbered, though the drawing has small notes in Japanese that offer a rare look into how this classic series was created. Good condition overall with minor edge and handling wear, a crease at the edge of the page not touching any artwork, and the animation drawing stuck to the cel.More information about Toei Animation.
