Popeye "Guarding Betty" Signed Limited Edition Cel, # 168/200 (King Features Syndicate/Fleischer - 1998). Throughout the 1990s, King Features released a series of hand-inked, hand painted limited edition cels featuring the Popeye cast. These were based on original art by legendary Fleischer Studios animator Myron Waldman (1908 - 2006). Perched atop his lifeguard stand, Popeye wears trunks and a "muskle" shirt. He has a whistle around his neck and a megaphone - all set to warn errant swimmers. Betty Boop is just below, dipping her toes into the breaking waves, while Pudgy curiously eyes a starfish. The piece is unusual in that it is "portrait", rather than "landscape", oriented. Mr. Waldman's signature is written in ink at the bottom right corner. Cel measures 9.5" x 12" and has been placed over a print background for display purposes. King Features/Toon Art seal is affixed to bottom right corner; Fleischer Studios seal is at bottom left, over edition number, 168/200. COA from King Features is included. In Fine condition.
