Description
Mulan Mushu and First Ancestor Employee-Only Limited Edition Cel #17/41 (Walt Disney, 1997). "The point is we will be sending a real dragon to retrieve Mulan." The First Ancestor says to Mushu who responds, "What... What... I'm a real dragon!" Here's a rare employee-only cel depicting this scene from the 22:53 time stamp in Walt Disney's 36th animated feature film. This is a rare employee-exclusive limited edition cel numbered 17 from a small edition of only 41 cels, hand-inked and hand-painted at Disney's renowned Ink and Paint Department. Because Mulan was hand-drawn on paper that was then scanned, painted and composited via computer, there are no production cels so these limited edition cels were created to carry-on the tradition of giving each crew member a production cel. After production wrapped on Mulan, WDFA cast and crew were allowed to select a limited edition cel from among 13 that were created exclusively for them. They have become highly prized by collectors because of their scarcity. This terrific cel contains a Disney seal in the lower right. The seal itself is pretty cool and features Mickey Mouse sitting at an animator's desk. It's presented over a print copy of the background. We love the airbrush work on the First Ancestor. It's a terrific effect plus the blue inking is gorgeous! This piece comes to auction with great provenance as it is from Peter Schneider's personal collection. Schneider was president of Feature Animation at the time and is widely regarded as one of the principals involved with Feature Animation's revival era which would become known as the Disney Renaissance.
