Description
Hercules Hades and Zeus Employee-Exclusive Limited Edition Cel #31/117 (Walt Disney, 1997). "So, Hades, you finally made it. How are things in the underworld?" A rare limited-edition cel featuring Zeus and Hades from Hercules (1997), created exclusively for Walt Disney Feature Animation employees and never sold to the public. From a tiny edition of 117, this example is numbered 31. Hand-painted at Disney's world-famous Ink & Paint Department in Burbank, the 16-field cel captures the moment (around the 5:31 timestamp) when a cheerful Zeus greets his sardonic brother-an early, tone-setting clash of sunshine and shadow. Because Hercules was animated on paper and then scanned, painted, and composited digitally, the production generated no traditional screen-used cels. To honor studio tradition, WDFA produced a small run of hand-painted limited editions for cast and crew to select after wrap-making each piece a rare, tangible memento of a digitally finished film. This cel is presented over a scene-matched printed background, bears the official Walt Disney Feature Animation seal at lower right, and includes a Disney Certificate of Authenticity. Vibrant character paint, crisp linework, and the sibling contrast of thunderous warmth versus volcanic wit make this an outstanding display piece-and a rare artifact from the studio's late-'90s renaissance.
