"Heckling Hare" Bugs Bunny and Willoughby Limited Edition Cel #55/500 (Warner Brothers, 1993).
This rare hand-painted limited edition cel of Bugs tricking dimwitted dog Willoughby into falling off a steep cliff has an interesting back-story. Heckling Hare (1941) was Tex Avery's last cartoon for Warner Brothers. In the cartoon, after Willoughby falls off the cliff, Bugs accidentally steps into the dog's freshly dug hole and falls himself, and both characters scream as they soar through the air together; but before hitting the ground, they gently turn and land on their feet! Bugs turns to the audience, says "Fooled ya, didn't we!" and the cartoon abruptly ends. Tex had planned for the pair to fall through together three times to milk the gag, the last time with Bugs saying "Hold on to your hats, folks, here we go again." This happened to be the punchline to a dirty joke popular at the time, which led Leon Schlesinger to quarrel with Tex over his ending. Leon won the argument, and Tex took off for greener pastures (at MGM).
This hard-to-find cel, with a low edition number of 55 out of 500, features Willoughby in a frantic pose as he sees his predicament, as Bugs calmly chomps on his carrot while watching him fall. Figure sizes are 7" (Bugs) and 5" (Willoughby). The cel is placed on a large print background that beautifully recreates the scene; it's matted, with a mat opening of 13" x 18.5". The setup is framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 22.5" x 28.5". A Warner Brothers COA is on back of the frame. Frame is sold as-is. Cel condition is Fine.
