DescriptionKoko the Clown Movement Chart Original Art (Max Fleischer, c. 1950s). Koko the Clown was Max Fleischer's first big cartoon star, in his 1918-29 Out of the Inkwell series of silent shorts. Max originally filmed his brother Dave in a clown suit, and used the Rotoscope method of transferring the images to hand-drawn animation. Max drew the character for the first couple of years before relegating art duties to staff animators. He rarely drew after 1919, but this set of 30 thumbnail drawings of Koko was actually created from his hand. These were created as "flip book" images; they show Koko walking, running, walking on all fours, walking upside-down, and cavorting around. Although Koko's last Fleischer-produced cartoon appeared in 1935, Max planned to revive his Out of the Inkwell series featuring Koko for television in 1958. The series was eventually produced in 1960-61 by Hal Seeger, featuring a total of 100 color cartoons. The flip book idea may have been designed to tie in with this series (by the way, this very image can be seen online at the Fleischer Studios website). At any rate, this is a super-rare piece of Fleischer art, drawn in ink with whiteout on a piece of onionskin paper measuring 9" x 6", and taped to a backing board; image size is 8" x 5", with individual image averaging .75". On back of the backing board is Max Fleischer's New York City address. Three small print-outs are included with the original; these are gummed on back, and designed to be cut out and stuck to the page corners of a book. Art is in Very Good condition with minor handling wear and slight rippling of the onionskin.
