Description
Kirk Douglas "Ned Land" Nautilus costume from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. (Disney, 1954) This is the uniform given to hero Ned Land (Kirk Douglas) following his daring rescue of "Captain Nemo" from the tentacles of the giant squid. Blue cotton canvas jacket and matching blue pants with red trim. Jacket bears interior Western Costume label over which the blue dye has made the marking illegible. What distinguishes this costume as being worn by Douglas are the sleeves that were shortened by the studio tucking and hemming them under the interior of the sleeves, designed to make the muscular Ned Land character appear larger. The shortened sleeve can be screen matched in the film being worn by Douglas. The pants feature a Western Costume label typewritten "Sub Crew", so it is unknown whether Douglas wore these particular Nautilus crew pants, but they were certainly used in the film. The distinctive red and gold Nautilus patch was removed following the production, and an exact recreation has been sewn in its place to complete the display. Missing buttons on the right sleeve; otherwise, in vintage fine condition. An extremely important costume from the top-billed actor in this timeless Disney science fiction epic.Auction Info
