Description

Jungle Drums Superman Production Background (Famous Studios, 1943). What do you get when you cross Superman, Nazis, and the African jungle? You get the 1943 Famous Studios short film Jungle Drums! This short was produced in the midst of World War II, hence the Nazi enemies, and it serves as both a thrilling Superman cartoon and a historic piece of World War II propaganda. Adolf Hitler himself even makes an appearance at the end of the short. In this short, Lois Lane is the sole survivor of a Nazi-downed Allied plane flying over the African jungle. In his dying breath, the plane's pilot entrusts Lois with the top-secret documents he had on him. Unfortunately, Lane is soon captured by the jungle's natives, who are revealed to be Nazis in disguise. Right when Lois is about to be burned at the stake by the Nazis, Superman swoops in to save her. This absolutely stunning original production background from Jungle Drums can be found at about the 2:41 mark of the short, just after Lois is captured by the disguised Nazis. The background shows spectacular detail with wonderful rendering of light and shadow. It is created with mixed media including pastels, charcoal, and ink on background board. The piece has been slightly trimmed, and it measures about 11.5" x 7.5". This short was the fifteenth of only seventeen Superman short films produced by Fleischer Studios/Famous Studios. This extremely rare and beautiful background is in Very Good condition, with just minor handling and edge wear, as well as a piece of tape on three corners on the back of the piece.
