Description

Japoteurs Superman Metropolis Production Background (Famous Studios, 1942). The wide streets of downtown Metropolis were spotlighted in this short, the tenth of the Fleischer/Famous Studios output of 17 Superman theatrical cartoons. Here's an original hand-painted/airbrushed background from Japoteurs, seen at the 8:31 mark as Superman gently lowers the "World's Largest Bombing Plane" after the giant airplane is hijacked by Japanese spies. The street can be clearly seen for a moment, including one car that has jumped the curb, before Superman lowers the plane right-side-up. This is a fantastic piece of artwork from one of the most famous series of animated cartoons ever made; the Fleischer Studios spent so much money on these shorts that the studio went bust, turning over everything to distributor Paramount, who renamed the Florida location as Famous Studios. Japoteurs was the first of the Superman cartoons to carry the Famous Studios name; it was released to theaters on 9/18/1942. Background artist Enrich Schenk (1901? - 1955) signed the "OK" stamp in the lower left corner; Schenk was known for his realistic work in 1940s comic books (he drew "funny animal" comics where the animals looked more lifelike than cartoony). The art is on a sheet of 17" x 13" illustration board, with an approximate image size of 16" x 11.25". Condition is Good to Very Good, with some minor soiling in the outer borders and handling wear.
