Xena: Warrior Princess Pair of Screen-Used Original Matte Paintings by Harrison Ellenshaw (NBC Universal, 2001). A striking pair of screen-used production matte paintings from the television series Xena: Warrior Princess, created by acclaimed visual effects supervisor Harrison Ellenshaw. Beautifully rendered in gouache on 31" x 47" board, each painting showcases Ellenshaw's signature command of atmosphere, scale, and luminous color-crafted to extend sets, build vistas, and transport viewers to mythic realms far beyond the physical location. Ellenshaw began his career at Walt Disney Studios before joining George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic, where he contributed matte paintings and backgrounds to Star Wars (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980). From 1999-2000 he supervised visual effects for Xena, guiding the show's world-building during its peak. A matte painting is a hand-painted representation of a landscape, set, or distant environment, composited with live action to create seamless, otherwise impractical locations. At its best, the technique is invisible-an elegant fusion of art and optics. Screen-used matte paintings from major productions are increasingly scarce; acquiring two companion works by Ellenshaw is a rare opportunity for collectors of film art and practical VFX history.
