Description
Tom Wood Good Housekeeping "Lumberjack Donald" Illustration Original Art (Walt Disney/Hearst, 1937). Donald's attempt to bring down a tree for two mouse orphans brings down a bee's nest instead, in this wonderful multi-panel magazine illustration. Good Housekeeping had been running illustrated verses like this since 1934, using adaptations of then-current or about to be released Disney cartoon shorts, but Lumberjack Donald was the first one that ultimately did not get made past the storyboard stage. At one point, Goofy was substituted for Donald and again storyboarded, but the short was ultimately never finished or released. The five panels of art are all on one sheet of illustration board with great images by Tom Wood (1887 - 1940) for the October issue of Hearst Corporation's long-running women's magazine. The artboard is custom matted with a linen front and overall size of 24" x 31.25". The art is included on page 139 of Mickey and the Gang, a book that gathers all the GH pages together with the stories behind them; we're including color photocopies of the book's cover and "Lumberjack Donald" page with the artwork. The art is in ink and watercolor/gouache with white paint and is in Good to Very Good condition with some minor handling, a few small stains, and age-related toning of the illustration board and some light indentations on the mat's upper left side.Auction Info
