Ruff and Reddy Little Golden Book Front Cover Illustration by Harvey Eisenberg Original Art plus Copy of Published Book (Golden Press, 1959). "They're tough but steady - always Ruff and Reddy!" The cat and dog pals star in this Little Golden Book #477 front cover illustration. After Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera left MGM where they directed and produced Tom and Jerry theatrical cartoons, they turned to television where they made their greatest impact. The Ruff and Reddy Show was their first series, about the unlikely friendship between a smart cat named Ruff and his good-natured but somewhat dim dog named Reddy and their adventures. It is considered the earliest original color series produced for Saturday mornings, and it ran for three seasons. H-B Studio animator and comic book/comic strip artist Harvey Eisenberg (1911 - 1965) produced this book's cover, with Ruff wearing no less than four hats placed on his head by Reddy. The art is in gouache, painted edge-to-edge on a piece of 7" x 8.5" illustration board. The "halo" of light blue along the edges suggests that the cover had been framed and faded a bit from sun exposure, but it's still a very attractive image of this pioneering duo. A third-printing copy of the published book is also included. The art is in Good to Very Good condition with mild fading and minor handling/edge wear.More information about Harvey Eisenberg.
