Description
Richard Scarry Smokey the Bear Little Golden Book Front Cover Illustration Original Art plus Production Photostat (Simon and Schuster, 1955). "Only YOU can prevent forest fires!" One of the most popular Little Golden Books of all time was illustrated by one of the most successful children's book artists, Richard Scarry (1919 - 1994). The story of the original Smokey Bear, an orphaned bear cub rescued with severe burns from a wildfire, captivated the public in the 1950s, and this children's storybook was but one example of how Smokey became the mascot of firefighters and the conscience of those who enjoy nature, hiking, and camping out. This very rare original appears as it was first published in 1955 with a light blue background that was replaced in later editions. It's painted in gouache on a piece of 10" x 13" illustration board, with an approximate image area of 9" x 10". The art is not signed but does include Richard Scarry's rubberstamped name and Ridgefield Connecticut PO box on the back side of the artboard. The board includes an onionskin overlay with penciled-in title and the date 10/22/54 written along the right side. An original black and white production photostat of the cover image with the added Little Golden Book "trade dressing" along the top edge is also included with the art. The painted art is in Good to Very Good condition with some handling, edge wear, light stains and mild soiling plus tack holes in the outer margins but with a still-vibrant image of Smokey.Auction Info
