Description
Pinocchio RARE British Lobby Card Original Art (Walt Disney, 1940). "I'm going to school!" "School! Ah, yes. Then you haven't heard of the easy road to success." We're excited to present an original one-of-a-kind and incredibly rare mixed media art used to make one of the British lobby cards for Disney's Pinocchio! The lobby card includes one of the key scenes in the film, which was initially released on 3/18/1940 in the UK. It was given a U rating by the British Board of Film Censors to indicate it was suitable for all audiences, something you can spot at the bottom edge of the board. Pinocchio wasn't a box office success upon its initial release, despite the praise it received for its impressive detail, realism, and effects, but did garner more popularity and financial success over its subsequent re-releases. The UK had six of these from 1946 to 1986 and this artwork was used for lobby cards some of these releases as well. The crisp artwork details Pinocchio's first meeting with Honest John and his sidekick Gideon when the naïve little puppet is tricked into skipping school so he can perform for the greedy puppet master Stromboli. The artist detailed the city streets and fountain with incredible accuracy and now gives us a new look at the classic characters, who are emphasized with bold black lines and dazzling poses. The lobby card artwork measures approximately 15'' x 12.75'' including the trimmed and attached text along the bottom edge. Original lobby cards with this design are hard-to-find, much less the one-of-a-kind original art for the card itself. Sure to be a prized find for lobby card collectors, the lot is presented in a 20'' x 18'' mat.Auction Info
