Description
Mickey Mouse and his Space Ship Little Golden Book First Edition Front Cover Illustration by John Ushler Original Art plus #D29 Published Book (Walt Disney/Simon & Schuster, 1952). Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck are our Cartoon Characters in Space in this wonderful vintage illustration. This is the original cover art for the earliest editions of Little Golden Book #D29 with an image by artist John Ushler, who at the time worked for Dell Comics/Western Publishing, although he did specialize in comic book adaptations of Disney films like Treasure Island and Davy Crockett. He later joined Disney circa 1962 as part of the studio's Comic Strip Department. Unlike Norm McCabe's 1963 cover (which used #D108), this one shows the boys not on the moon but approaching it from space. It reflects the public's fascination with spaceships that began anew after films like Destination Moon (1950) were popular with movie audiences. The cover painting is done in gouache on board with an approximate image size of 10.5" x 12.75" and framed without a mat to show the various production notes written by hand in the outer borders. The Plexiglas-front frame measures 16.25" x 19". All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition. A first-printing copy of the book is included. The art is in Good to Very Good condition with some handling wear and mild age-related toning that does not affect the image.More information about Walt Disney Studios - Fab Five.
