Description

Marc Davis South African Lions - From Life Original Ink Drawing with From Life Bear Ink Drawing (Walt Disney, 1933/34). "Whether he was drawing a big cat, a bird, or a monkey, Marc had a way of finding the essence of a creature." This lot features two spectacular pieces of original observational art by Disney Legend inductee and one of Disney's "Nine Old Men" Marc Davis (1913 - 2000). Davis had long been known for his skill drafting animals, something that he mastered over the years in his youth by frequently studying animals at local zoos. It made him invaluable when the studio was creating Bambi and other animated features with animal protagonists. This remarkable set of ink-on-board drawings are dated 3/30/1933 and 2/2/1934, one of which is titled South African Lions - From Life. Created by Marc when he was only 20 years old! The roughly 9" x 11.5" and 11.75'' x 13.5'' papers feature five studies. Each is wonderfully detailed with masterful hatching, and both are signed by Marc Davis using early stylized signatures. This is an incredibly rare chance to add an early piece from this prolific artist to your collection! Good condition overall with light age-related toning, smudging, and handling wear.
