Description

Dungeons & Dragons Full Cast Publicity Drawing (Marvel Studios, c. 1983-85). The full cast of the 1980s animated adaptation of Gary Gygax's tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons makes a superb appearance in this rare original publicity drawing. Gygax along with Dave Arneson developed what is widely regarded as the first modern role-playing game (RPG) publishing the first edition of Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 with the initial printing selling out in less than a year. As the game grew in popularity over the following decade, Gygax left for Hollywood to explore licensing opportunities for his property leading to the production of this animated series beginning in fall 1983. The series was produced by Marvel Studios with some animation done by powerhouse Japanese studio Toei who would later be known for their wildly popular adaptations of Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon in the 1990s. Dungeons & Dragons would go on to air for 27 action-packed episodes and received critical acclaim before its untimely cancellation just prior Season Three's finale due in part to perceived controversial levels of violence. More recently in January 2009, IGN ranked the series at #64 on its "Best 100 Animated Series" list. Like many popular 1980s TV series, Dungeons & Dragons was met with a wide array of merchandise including VHS releases, books, toys, and more, and this publicity drawing may have been created in association with one of those many products or possibly for advertising use. It has been rendered in graphite on a sheet of 12 field animation paper to an image area of 9.25" x 7.75" and features Eric the Cavalier, Bobby the Barbarian, Diana the Acrobat, Presto the Magician, the villainous Venger, Sheila the Thief, Uni their unicorn familiar, Dungeon Master, and party leader Hank the Ranger from left to right with Hank's image being the largest. The lower left contains one additional, unidentified character wearing glasses and may be a reference to lauded creator Gygax. With typical studio handling and edge wear including faint age-related toning, a small tear/hole near the top edge, and a rough lower edge, overall this rare publicity drawing is in Very Good condition.
