Description
Donald Duck in Disneyland Mickey Mouse Club Book #D24 Illustrations by Campbell Grant Original Art plus Published Book Group of 5 (Walt Disney/Simon & Schuster, 1955). Donald and his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie get separated while visiting Disneyland in this early children's storybook issued in conjunction with the July 1955 opening of Walt's fantastic theme park. In this group are four original double-page book illustrations with art by Campbell Grant (1909 - 1992), an animator with Disney beginning in 1934. Mr. Grant later moved to illustrating Little Golden Books after leaving the studio (this "Mickey Mouse Club Book" edition was later reprinted as a Little Golden Book). These gouache on Bristol board illustrations are noted as for pages 4-5 (Disneyland Main Street USA -- the illustration is on a cut piece of board affixed to a backing board); 12-13 (Mark Twain Riverboat -- illustration is on a cut piece of board affixed to a backing board and appears in the second-printing copy of the book included with the art as pages 10-11); and pages 22-23 (Louie in the flying Jolly Roger pirate ship as Captain Hook watches -- appears in our copy as pages 18-19). The fourth double-page spread does not appear in our copy (but does appear in the 1960 edition on pages 12-13) and shows all three nephews riding the Skyway gondolas; this painted image is matted with an approximate opening size of 13" x 8.5" and overall mat size of 19" x 14.5". The double-page spreads have overall image areas of 12.5" x 8.5" (including space for text) while the artboards range in size from 13.5" x 9.5" to 14" x 11". The art is in Good to Very Good condition with some handling wear and light stains in the outer borders.More information about Grant, Campbell Artist.
