How the Grinch Stole Christmas Grinch Close-Up Production Cel Signed by Chuck Jones (MGM, 1966). "Tomorrow is Christmas. It's practically here!" growls the Grinch, as he warns his pup Max about the quickly-approaching holiday. The Grinch turns his grimacing face directly toward the viewer as he ponders what he can do to keep Christmas from arriving in Whoville. This is quite possibly one of the best Grinch cels that we have ever seen. The image of the Grinch's scowling visage is absolutely massive, measuring about 5.5" x 7.5"! The original, hand-painted production cel is perfectly complemented by a recreated underlay cel that finishes off the image with the Grinch's green-hued curl of hair and his shoulders. The total size of the original cel plus the overlay cel is a whopping 5.5" x 12". The Grinch was voiced in the beloved 1966 Christmas special How the Grinch Stole Christmas by the legendary Boris Karloff, who also narrated the classic Christmas story. Karloff received a Grammy Award for his voice work in the film. This image can be found in the special at about the 3:33 mark. The image impeccably captures the essence of the Grinch throughout the majority of the special, before he has a change of heart in the film's finale. The Grinch's sinister red eyes, furrowed brow, and disgusted expression make this a quintessential depiction of the ill-tempered, Christmas-hating creature. The composition of this piece is also outstanding, with the Grinch's positioning and placement adding more interest, tension, and artistic merit to this already-fantastic piece. The cel is signed by Chuck Jones (1912 - 2002), the director and producer of the special and one of the most legendary figures in animation history. The piece bears a Linda Jones seal on its lower left corner, and it also comes with a Linda Jones Letter of Authenticity. This exceptional setup is matted and framed with Plexiglas, with a matboard aperture of 10" x 12" and an overall frame size of 19.5" x 21.5". The production cel is in Very Good condition, with minor handling and edge wear, and the frame is sold as-is.
