Horton Hatches the Egg Horton Studio Model Sheet (Warner Brothers, 1942). This animated 1942 short based on the popular book by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) marks the first time a Dr. Seuss character was animated. It was released as part of Warner Brothers' Merrie Melodies series and animated at Leon Schlesinger Studios. Theodor Geisel got to know many of the animators at Warner Brothers Studio through his work in the animation department of the U.S. Army during WWII. Directed by Bob Clampett, there were no storyboards used in its production of this film, instead he simply sketched additional ideas in his copy of the book. Presented is a rare studio model sheet of Horton which features an array of character images, expressions and style notations for animators to reference and is one of the funniest model sheets we've ever seen. It is printed on 16" x 12 photographic paper. This is a remarkable rarely seen studio document from the first appearance of an animated Dr. Seuss' character. The model sheet has a fold crease through the center; otherwise, condition is Very Good. From the Rev Chaney Archives.
