Horton Hatches the Egg Horton Animation Drawing and Mayzie Model Sheet Group of 2 (Warner Brothers, 1942). Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) got to know many of the animators at Warner Brothers Studio through his work in the animation department of the U.S. Army during WWII. This animated short film was produced in 1942 and based on the popular book by Geisel (which marked the first instance of a Seuss children's book story being animated). It was released as part of Warner Brothers' Merrie Melodies series and animated at Leon Schlesinger Studios. Directed by Bob Clampett, there were no storyboards used in its production, rather he simply sketched additional ideas in his copy of the book. Included in this lot is an original animation drawing of Horton who measures 5.5" x 6" rendered in graphite and red pencil on 12 field 2-peghole paper. The paper also features production numbers, director notes and bears a rare "BMcK" stamp indicating that it was drawn or approved by Robert McKimson. With the drawing is an equally rare studio model sheet of Horton's friend Mayzie which provides an array of character images, expressions and style notations for animators to reference. It is printed on 16" x 10.5" photographic paper. This is a remarkable collection of rarely-seen items from the first animated appearance of Dr. Seuss' characters. The drawing has two staple holes at the top and shows light toning and the model sheet has a fold crease through the center and pinholes in the corners. Condition overall is Very Good.
