    Description

Gustaf Tenggren (attributed) Moth and the Flame Preliminary Background Art (Walt Disney, 1938). This short, the 70th in the Silly Symphony series, had two directors –Burt Gillett, and Dick Huemer, with David Hand in charge of production. Although uncredited, Swedish-born artist Gustaf Tenggren (1896 – 1970) designed some of the backgrounds for this charming short, which was first shown in theaters on 4/1/1938. Here's a beautiful preliminary test production background painting of a shelf in the costume shop the moths have invaded. Two items on the shelf made it to the screen; see the thimble at the end of the shelf at the 5:32 mark, and the red box in the middle can be found at the 5:39 mark. The richly detailed (especially for a preliminary) artwork is in graphite, gouache and watercolor, on a sheet of 12 field 5-peghole background board. On back of the board, written in red pencil is the note, "Camera – Run color test please" and what appears to be Tenggren's signature. The painting is matted with an opening of 10" x 7.5", and an overall mat size of 14.25" x 11.5". Minor handling wear and board toning. Very Good condition.
