Description
Gulliver's Travels Production Cel Setup with Key Master Background (Max Fleischer, 1939). The giant who washed ashore proves to be a friend to the tiny residents of Lilliput, in this magnificent original production setup. Gulliver's Travels was the Fleischer Studio's ambitious attempt to duplicate the success of Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, although it had been planned as early as 1934. It was considered a major box-office hit, but distributor Paramount fined the studio for going over budget, which spelled the beginning of the end for brothers Max and Dave Fleischer. The backgrounds for this production rivaled the best of Disney, and this wonderful painted 16 field background of King Little's castle, the town, and mountains is simply breathtaking on its own The detail is simply fantastic, with dozens of tiny Lilliputians; the people Gulliver is looking down on are actually painted on a "flap" stapled over the hand-inked, hand-painted 2-cel setup. Gulliver measures a nice 5" tall in a kneeling position. A notation of "11/10/39 SHOT" in the lower border shows how rushed the production was to meet the 12/22/39 release date. A wonderful museum-worthy Key Scene setup, from around the 44:05 mark into the film. Cels are very lightly sticking to background; a note on back shows the art was deacidied in 1982.
