Gertie the Dinosaur Production Drawings by Winsor McCay (1914). A group of two extremely rare original inked drawings of the first cartoon superstar, Gertie the Dinosaur. In this early period of animated art, there was no use of nitrate or acetate cels -- Winsor McCay drew each frame by hand, in ink (over light graphite in some places) on rice paper. The finished cartoon was originally presented as a road show featuring McCay live, performing "tricks" with his on-screen creation, advertised as "Gertie the Trained Dinosaur." Later, a new print was made incorporating film of McCay. The cartoon is listed as #6 in Jerry Beck's book, The 50 Greatest Cartoons: As Selected by 1,000 Animation Professionals. The paper is approximately 8.5" x 6.5", mounted to slightly larger backing boards. The first panel is marked #38, and features Gertie face-on, looking slightly to her left, where McCay would be standing on stage. She measures 3.5" x 4.25". The second panel, numbered 217, shows Gertie with her head over the edge (drinking a lake dry after consuming an entire tree; the hole left in the ground can be seen above the production number); her massive body measures about 6.5" x 3.25". Minor handling and aging. Very Good condition.
