Gertie the Dinosaur Animation Drawing (Winsor McCay, 1914). Gertie the dinosaur devours a tree stump in this original pen and ink artwork from the hand of Winsor McCay (1869 - 1934). It was used in the actual creation of the landmark animated short, Gertie The Dinosaur. This historic animated film predates the use of nitrate or acetate cels, so McCay personally drew each individual frame by hand on rice paper. Gertie, the subject of McCay's third cartoon, was animation's first superstar and premiered February 8, 1914 at the Palace Theater in Chicago. Legend has it that both Walter Lantz and Dave Fleischer were inspired to careers in animation by this film, also known as Gertie the Trained Dinosaur. It's ranked #6 in Jerry Beck's book The 50 Greatest Cartoons. In true Winsor McKay style, the ink drawing is masterfully detailed with Gertie measuring 4.5" tall. It's a true masterpiece of animation history by one of the world's most celebrated and innovative cartoonists! The art is framed under Plexiglas with a mat opening of 7.75" x 5.75" in a 19.75" x 18" frame. Condition is Very Good. Frame sold as-is.
