Description

George of the Jungle/Super Chicken Pilot Egg Benedict's Bedroom Production Background (Jay Ward, 1967). The George of the Jungle Show included three segments: George of the Jungle, Super Chicken and Tom Slick, but the pilot episode only featured the first two. Since it was used to sell the series, production costs were kept low and both segments were profoundly different than the 16 episodes to follow, especially the opening them songs. In this lot is an extraordinarily rare hand-painted production background from the very first Super Chicken cartoon. It appears around the 8:28 mark of the full pilot episode and was painted by longtime color stylist and background artist for Jay War Productions, Sam Clayberger (1926 - 2018). The image of thirteen sleeping chickens was painted with gouache on heavy Bristol board measuring approximately 13.5" x 10.5". The artboard includes a protective acetate overlay. This show's original run was only four months in 1967 and was last one produced by Jay ward before his passing in 1989. Despite it's short run, it remains a favorite of cartoon connoisseurs nearly 60 years later. The art is in Very Good condition with minor handling and tack holes in all four corners.
From the Archive of Sam Clayberger and Michael Kadin.
