Felix the Cat Small Drawings Signed by Pat Sullivan Group of 2 (King Features Syndicate/Pat Sullivan Studio, c. 1920s). The first superstar of animation was not Mickey Mouse, but Felix the Cat, whose silent-era cartoons were tops at the box office. The character originated as "Master Tom" in a 1919 cartoon, Musical Mews, which was produced for Paramount by Pat Sullivan's New York animation studio. By the mid-twenties, he was known as Felix. Pat Sullivan (1885 - 1933) began his animation career with early pioneer Raoul Barré before setting up his own studio. Most people credit Sullivan's employee Otto Messmer with the creation of Felix (we believe Mr. Messmer did draw the undated example); however, the signatures of Mr. Sullivan have been deemed authentic. There are two pieces here; one is on light blue paper measuring 3.25" x 4.5", and dated 1925, affixed to a small board. The second is on 5.25" x 3.25" board. Image sizes are 2" x 1.75" and 3.25" x 2.5". Letters of Authenticity from PSA/DNA and James Spence are included. Art condition is Very Good.
