Fantasia Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer's Apprentice Animation Drawings by Preston Blair Group of 9 (Walt Disney, 1940). Here's an absolutely amazing sequence of original 12 field 5-peghole roughs of Mickey Mouse in his greatest role, as drawn from the hand of animation legend Preston Blair. Mr. Blair began his career first with Walter Lantz Studios at Universal and then the Charles Mintz Studio at Screen Gems, but by 1936, he had moved over to the prestigious Disney Studios. Mr. Blair first animated Mickey Mouse in the short Mickey's Polo Team, but the real prize assignment during his short stay at the studio (which ended in 1942), was the task of animating Mickey in Fantasia for "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" segment. His section would be the sequence where a still-dreaming Mickey slides out of his chair into the ever-growing pool of water caused by his magical broom mischief. This sequence begins at about 5:07. This set of eight drawings shows our sleeping hero, still pointing skyward as he "directs the stars" before the chair tips and dumps him in the water, about five seconds later. The graphite drawings have nice large images of Mickey, ranging from 6.25" to 5" across. The drawings are numbered in the lower right corner (all with the letter H) as 166, 167, 168, 169, 170, 171, 183, and 184. In addition, there's an extra full-figure drawing of Mickey standing with a sheepish look on his face, with the Sorcerer's hat shown both straight up and sagging; this graphite drawing has a figure size of 4" on trimmed paper measuring 4.25" x 8.5". Overall condition on all of these is quite nice, with only minor handling wear, ranging from Very Good to Fine.
