    Description

Fantasia Dewdrop Fairy Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1940).
Envisioned as a nature ballet, rather than the traditional Christmas story of its source material, the "Nutcracker Suite" segment is a tour de force of effects animation. Tchaikovsky's titular Sugar Plum Fairies were changed to "Dewdrop Fairies." These tiny delicate creatures with dragonfly wings dart about the varied flora of a woodland setting decorating the foliage with magical dewdrops. Dandelions, spider webs, honeysuckle, seed pods, milk weeds, and graceful swirling ivy all catch the sun's rays and sparkle from the jewel-like dewdrops in this perfect marriage of music and art. Special transparent paint that could adhere to the cels was formulated by the Ink and Paint Department, to add an ephemeral air to the scene. Animator Les Clark patterned many of the fairies' flitting movements after hummingbird flight patterns. The dainty Dewdrop Fairy is drawn here in mid-flight, wand raised, as she lightly taps the tips of the plant leaves to enchant them... She is drawn in graphite and colored pencil on 16 field 5-peghole animation paper, and measures 4.5" high. This is an exceptional drawing, from one of the most magical scenes in the film. Paper has light creasing and toning. In Very Good condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
