Falling Hare Bugs Bunny Production Cel and Painted Background (Warner Brothers, 1946). "Sorry folks, we ran out of gas. You know how it is with these A cards" says Bugs Bunny in the last seconds of this classic Bugs and Gremlin short directed by Bob Clampett. Falling Hare originally went into production under the title Bugs Bunny and the Gremlin. Walt Disney was developing a feature based on Roald Dahl's novel The Gremlins at the time and asked other animation studios not to produce any films involving gremlins. Warner Brothers was too far into production on this cartoon and another gremlin short, Russian Rhapsody to remove the references to gremlins, so Leon Schlesinger merely re-titled the cartoons as a compromise. This is an original hand-inked, hand-painted production cel from the 1943 Merrie Melodies short. The character measures 9" x 5" on a 12 field cel over a custom painted background. Vintage war era Warner Brothers production art is some of the rarest around and a huge image of Bugs complete with carrot makes this cel a true one-of-a-kind piece. It is framed under Plexiglas with a mat opening of 11" x 9" in a 21" x 19" frame. Condition is Very Good and frame is sold as-is.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
