    Description

Eyvind Earle (attributed) Sleeping Beauty Pan Production Background (Walt Disney, 1959). In the book The Archive Series -- Layout and Background John Lasseter writes "One of the things Walt Disney did so well was take an audience in to the world of story. Watch any Disney movie, and you'll immediately be carried away to another time and another place. In the animated film, the backgrounds and layouts are what create these worlds." This is a breathtaking gouache and watercolor pan background painting, measuring 12" x 40" of a detailed medieval staircase located within Maleficent's castle. It is attributed to Mr. Eyvind Earle, the color stylist and chief background painter for Sleeping Beauty. The majority of every background was hand-painted by Eyvind Earle himself. Where a normal background painter can do one background a day, Earle painstakingly took seven to ten days to complete just one. Sleeping Beauty took almost ten years to make and was the first animated feature to be filmed in Techniram Widescreen. It was Disney's 16th feature film, released on January 29, 1959. Mr. Earle's paintings hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other Fine Art museums, and this magnificently detailed piece would fit right in; it is simply breathtaking. Fine condition, matted and framed with glass for an overall size of 45.75" x 17.25".

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
