Epcot Spaceship Earth Concept art and Story lines by John DeCuir and Ray Bradbury Group of 5 (Walt Disney, 1977). Spaceship Earth is the geodesic sphere that serves as the symbolic structure of Epcot at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Starting out it went through an array of designs that differed greatly from its final look. In this lot are three early sketches of preliminary concept designs by renowned artist John DeCuir (1918 - 1991). Mr. DeCuir was a Hollywood art director and production designer known for his elaborate set designs and was awarded three Oscars for his work on The King and I, Cleopatra, and Hello, Dolly! Two of the drawings are rendered in ink on 8.5" x 11" sheets of paper. They measure 17" x 33" and 17" x 22" respectively. The third drawing is ink on an 11" x 8.5" transparency over pastel colored paper. Spaceship Earth is also the name of the ride attraction that is housed within the sphere. It that takes guests on a time machine-themed experience where they are shown how advancements in human communication have helped to create the future. Passengers journey back in time to witness the origins of prehistoric man, then travel forward to witness important breakthroughs in communication throughout history. These informative vignettes were developed in part by science fiction writer Ray Bradbury (1920 - 2012) and included with the lot are two notes to artist John DeCuir signed by Bradbury and story outlines titled "Alpha Centauri Seven" and "Space Shuttle Concepts". Also included is a script for "The American Dream" by Disney Legend inductee, director James Algar. This is a treasure trove of original concept art and official studio documents from the early developmental stages of Epcot and likely the only ones like them in existence. The lot shows handling and age. Condition is Very Good.
