    Description

Elmer's Candid Camera Happy Rabbit (Bugs Bunny Prototype) Production Cel Setup (Warner Brothers, 1940). Here's a real rarity, an original hand-inked, hand-painted production cel that traces the origins of the relationship between Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny. Elmer's Candid Camera was the fourth and last short to feature a Bugs Bunny prototype, after Porky's Hare Hunt (1938), Presto-Change-O, and Hare-um Scare-um (both 1939). In this Chuck Jones-directed cartoon, the first to pair the rabbit with Elmer Fudd (still dressed like "Egghead" but with his classic speech defects in full display), "Happy Rabbit" has a voice similar to film comedian Joe E. Brown. With the Tex Avery short A Wild Hare, the rabbit utters his famous line "What's up, Doc?" in his more familiar Brooklyn accent, as voiced by Mel Blanc. This cel from Elmer's Candid Camera features Happy Rabbit -- basically Bugs Bunny with black tips on his ears and pink face -- trapped by Elmer's net, as seen at the 5:34 mark in the short. Naturally, he manages to reverse the situation after "fainting," flipping the net onto Elmer in the next scene. The cel's image area measures approximately 7.5" x 5.75". A second cel with a printed "This is an original painting I used in 'Looney Tunes' and 'Merrie Melodies' Leon Schlesinger" inscription, and placed on a print background. This is from the very brief Warner Brothers Art Program, which sold cels in galleries and department stores, similar to Disney's Courvoisier cel setups. Any production cel from a 1940s Looney Tunes or Merrie Melodies short is extremely scarce, as most animation art from the Warner's archive was trashed sometime in the 1960s. Finding one with a Happy Rabbit image is twice as scarce! The setup is matted with an opening of 11" x 8", and an overall mat size of 15.25" x 12.5". In Very Good condition with minor handling wear.
