Elmer's Candid Camera Elmer Fudd Original Production Cel Signed by Chuck Jones with Happy Rabbit Presentation Cel (Warner Brothers, 1940). "'Course, if you don't like rabbits, you don't like rabbits!" The 1940 Merrie Melodies short Elmer's Candid Camera marked the very first appearance of the bumbling Elmer Fudd. Fudd evolved from Tex Avery's character "Egghead," and this cartoon's Elmer still looks very much like the character of Egghead, particularly the man's bulbous nose and round bald head. This short was also the final starring role for Happy Rabbit, the early prototype of what would become Bugs Bunny. The Chuck Jones-directed, Bob McKimson-animated short gives us the first look at the iconic rivalry between Elmer Fudd and the conniving rabbit. This original, hand-painted, hand-inked production cel depicts a very angry Elmer Fudd as Happy Rabbit taunts him. All Elmer wanted was a nice, quiet day photographing wild animals, but Happy Rabbit ensures that all his attempts to snap photos fail. This moment can be found at about the 4:59 mark of this short. The nearly full-figure, brilliantly-posed image of Elmer measures an impressive 5.5" x 7.75"! The cel is signed in its lower right corner by Chuck Jones (1912 - 2002), and it bears a Leon Schlesinger stamp in its lower left. The original cel is paired with a new recreated cel of Happy Rabbit to complete the image, and the cels are set atop a color background. This historic piece comes with a Linda Jones Certificate of Authenticity, and it is matted and framed with Plexiglas, with a matboard aperture of 13.75" x 8.5" and an overall frame size of 22.5" x 18.5". Elmer's cel is in Good condition, with some handling, small cracks in the paint, and a few small areas of paint separation and discoloration. The recreated image of the rabbit is in Fine condition. The frame is sold as-is.
