DescriptionDr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas Production Cel with Key Master Background, Layout Drawing Group of 2, and Animation Drawing (MGM, 1966). "Then he went up the chimney himself, the old liar. And the last thing he took was the log for their fire. On their walls he left nothing but hooks and some wire." Here's an incredible offering from Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. All of this artwork is from the scene when the Grinch takes the Who's Christmas decorations (even the firewood). In this lot is the original hand-painted production cel of the Grinch's hands as he snatches the log from the Who's fire. The 12 field cel is presented over a matching Key Master background of the Who family fireplace where the stockings once hung. The piece was painted in gouache on 16.5" x 12" background board. Included are two layouts for the scene. In traditional hand-drawn animation, layout artists define the perspective of the animation frames by drawing the backgrounds. The relative size of the objects in the background of a flat image, as compared to the action in the foreground, influences how viewers perceive the scene. Layouts are drawings done to represent how a background should look in its final form; essentially, they are the blueprints for the painted background. The layouts were rendered in graphite and color pencil on 16 field animation paper. A graphite animation drawing of the Grinch's hands snatching the log is included on the back of the frame along with two Certificates of Authenticity and a Letter of Authenticity issued by Linda Jones. The background and two layouts are in a three-aperture frame of 26.25" x 51.5". The matboard apertures measure 15.75" x 12". The COAs and third drawing are on the reverse. Layouts exhibit edge wear with a torn corner and wrinkling throughout. Frame sold as-is. Artwork condition is Fair to Very Good.
