    Description

Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas Production Cel (MGM, 1966). After convincing Theodor Seuss Giesel (aka Dr. Seuss) that he could create an animated adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Chuck Jones (1912 - 2002) created color storyboards and shopped them around to corporate sponsors. Jones made over 20 presentations but wasn't able to convince anyone to fund the project until an organization called the Foundation for Commercial Banks agreed. The ample budget resulted in fuller animation and higher production values than most other television animation of the period. When How the Grinch Stole Christmas was finished, CBS paid $315,000 for the rights to air it twice. It was a significant sum for the period. An article that ran in Variety in October 1966 was titled, "The Grinch-It Not Only Stole Christmas But Picked CBS' Pocket for $315,000". In this lot we have a superb production cel showing the Grinch stealing a Christmas tree in his effort to stop Christmas. The cel is hand-inked and hand-painted onto 12 field, 3-peghole acetate and paired with a background copy for presentation purposes. The cel has an estate-printed Chuck Jones signature and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Linda Jones Enterprises. Normal handling and edge wear. Condition of the artwork is Very Good.
