Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas Pan Background Layout Drawing by Maurice Noble (MGM, 1966). Here's an amazingly large background layout from the opening sequence in Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas when the camera starts at the top of the mountain and pans down to Whoville. The layout was created by Chuck Jones' long-time right-hand man, Maurice Noble (1911 - 2001). Noble joined Walt Disney in 1934 painting backgrounds for the Silly Symphony shorts. He went on the paint backgrounds for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and the "Rite of Spring" sequence in Fantasia. He left Disney after the animator's strike in 1941, joined the Army and met a guy named Ted Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss). Oddly enough his unit was based at the Fox Studios under Col. Frank Capra. The unit did the writing, storyboards, and background designs for Private Snafu. When Warner Bros won the contract for Private Snafu they hired a young animator named Chuck Jones to direct it. It was a match made in animation heaven, and what would follow would become legendary. This incredible layout drawing was rendered in graphite and color pencil on 58" animation paper. The piece is framed to 65" x 19". It's a whopper! Included is a Letter of Authenticity issued by Linda Jones Enterprises. Frames are sold as-is. The layout exhibits wrinkling throughout with fold creases and tape. Condition is Good.
