    Description

Douglas Fairbanks Illustration by Dave Tendlar (1926). The early talent of animator/comic book artist Dave Tendlar (1909 – 1993) was evident in this early illustration of Douglas Fairbanks from the silent film classic The Black Pirate. This was done for Dave's school newspaper, back when he attended Stivers High School in New York. Mr. Tendlar began his career in 1931, working on Popeye and Betty Boop cartoons for Fleischer Studios. He continued with Famous Studios, taking time out to illustrate comic book stories for titles like Jingle Jangle and later worked for other animation studios, like Terrytoons and Hanna-Barbera. The signed art is in ink with faint watercolor highlights on Bristol board measuring approximately 7.5" x 7.75". The image area measures 6" x 6". Condition is Good, with toning and handling wear, including creases in the lower right corner (away from the image).
