Davy Crockett's Keelboat Race and Other Storybook Illustrations by Mel Crawford Original Art Group of 8 (Walt Disney/Simon & Schuster, c. 1955-56). The popularity of the first season Disneyland television series 3-part serial featuring Fess Parker as Davy Crockett was enormous. Naturally, more episodes were ordered up, and with the second season, there would be two more for fans to enjoy. The first was titled "Davy Crockett and the Keelboat Race" which introduced Mike Fink, the "King of the River." Crockett and buddy Georgie Russell (played by Buddy Ebsen) race with Fink to New Orleans in this exciting story, which was adapted into a "Mickey Mouse Club" storybook. Here are three painted illustrations from that book by Mel Crawford (1925 - 2015), best known as a illustrator of Dell/Gold Key comic books, and also for comic strips and other book illustrations. The illustrations are painted in gouache on stiff boards with an average size of 10" x 7.5". These are from pages 4, 11, and 18. Also included are five more very similar illustrations by Mel Crawford, believed to be based on the second episode, "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates" (or perhaps unused illos intended for the Keelboat book) Each of these eight illustrations practically fill the artboard. A copy of Davy Crockett and the Keelboat Race is included. Art condition is Very Good with minor handling wear.
