Davy Crockett King of the Wild Frontier Storybook Illustrations by Mel Crawford Original Art Group of 2 (Walt Disney/Simon and Schuster, 1955). When the original Davy Crockett three-part serial starring Fess Parker ran on the Disneyland TV series in 1955, kids went crazy, and soon "coonskin" caps and other Crockett paraphernalia could be seen everywhere. Several different storybooks were rushed into print to capitalize on the Davy Crockett popularity, and here is some original artwork for the 1955 Little Golden Book edition, painted by noted children's book illustrator and comic book artist Mel Crawford (1925 - 2015). The first illustration is from the title page, showing Davy's cap, flintlock rifle, powder horn, and fringed leather bag; the image measures approximately 7.5" x 5.75". The second illustration is from the last story page, and shows Davy and his friend George Russel (played by Buddy Ebsen) on horseback, as George plays guitar and sings. The image size is 9.5" x 7.25". Both paintings are in acrylics and white paint on illustration board, each piece measuring 11" x 14". These are both superb, nicely detailed paintings from a great artist. Color prints of the book's cover and two pages are included. Boards show mild toning and minor handling/edge wear, but the artwork remains vibrant and gorgeous. Overall art condition is Very Good. Sing it with us now - "Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier!"
