Cutie Honey Production Cel with Master Background (Toei Animation, c. 1973-74). The sword-wielding pink-haired warrior of love Cutie Honey narrowly avoids thrown knives in this magnificent hand-painted original production cel. Regarded by many as the very first of the popular "magical girl" subgenre of anime, Cutie Honey was created by the revolutionary and versatile manga artist Go Nagai, creator of other genre-defining works like Devilman, Mazinger Z and Violence Jack. Initially planned to be geared toward young girls, the show's timeslot caused the target audience to shift toward teenage boys, which resulted in the notorious and iconic scanty dress and frequent nudity of the main character. A great image of the eponymous protagonist, this cel is presented on an original Master background hand-painted in gouache. The setup measures an overall 10.5" x 10", and it shows minor handling and edge wear with the background showing some wrinkling near the bottom edge. The cel shows light debris, and the condition overall is Very Good.
