Description

World War II Propaganda Film Explosion Effects Concept/Layout Paintings Group of 3 (Walt Disney, c. 1940s). From the personal archive of and attributed to Disney Legend Ken O'Connor (1908 - 1998), comes this trio of concept/layouts of explosion effects that Disney Studios contributed to one of their many government contracted WWII propaganda films produced throughout the early to mid-1940s. During the War years, O'Connor worked both at the Disney studio as well as alongside other prominent Hollywood animators from various studios with Frank Capra on films for the First Motion Picture Unit (aka 18th AAF Base Unit) including work on the famous Disney-produced propaganda film Victory Through Air Power. Though these explosion effects are similar in form to the penultimate battle shown in that feature, the prominent lightning-style effects are not represented and they are likely from a different film. The concept/layouts have been rendered in gouache on three panels trimmed from a single piece of red illustration board to similar sizes of approximately 22" x 10" with one panel featuring its artwork painted on a sheet of acetate trimmed to 17" x 9.5" and tape-mounted to the board; another panel includes two mounted production notes. With typical handling and edge wear including adhesion of the cel to the illustration board, remaining studio tape, minor corner/edge splitting, and faint surface wear/debris, overall this explosive trio is in Good condition.
