    Description

World War II Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse Gag Concept Original Art (Walt Disney, c. 1942). Rare page of in-studio wartime gag concept sketches, two featuring Donald Duck, and one with Mickey Mouse. These appear to be ideas for Navy recruitment posters or insignia art. Judging from the Imperial Japan-based gags for Donald, we assume this to have been done not long after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The top gag with Donald and a Japanese soldier is quite gruesome but understandable given the era; it's captioned "It's Easy to Get A-Head in the Navy!" The middle drawing has Donald in a determined stance (with Mickey's clenched fist behind him); it's captioned "We're on the Go to Tokio" (spelling incorrect). The bottom gag has a lost-in-thought Mickey Mouse wearing a sailor's cap and sitting on a bomb or torpedo; it's captioned "Let's see." The art is in graphite and color pencils on a sheet of 8.5" x 11" paper; figure sizes range from 2.5" to 3.5". Fascinating Disney Studio artwork from a very dark time in world history. Paper toning with handling and edge wear. Good condition.
