Description

Wonderful World of Oz - Proposed Theme Park - Pair of Original Concept Art Illustrations by William Stout for "Castle Courtyard" and "Oz Compass Plaza" for Landmark Entertainment (LEG, 1999). This pair of original concept artworks was created by Landmark Entertainment Group for the proposed Wizard of Oz-themed park, Wonderful World of Oz. Rendered in gouache on 20" x 30" and 20" x 20" illustration boards by acclaimed illustrator William Stout and dated 1999, the pieces envision the "Castle Courtyard" and "Oz Compass Plaza." Both works capture the cinematic spectacle and immersive quality that Landmark sought to achieve in translating the beloved 1939 MGM film into a full-scale destination. William Stout, renowned for his fantasy and paleontological art, brought extraordinary credentials to the project, with credits ranging from Heavy Metal magazine to Ralph Bakshi's Wizards, as well as album covers for The Rolling Stones and The Who. His bold style perfectly suited Landmark's ambition. Landmark envisioned Wonderful World of Oz as a richly themed environment, recreating Munchkinland, the Yellow Brick Road, the Wicked Witch's Castle, and the Emerald City, along with shows, retail, and advanced attractions. Though never realized, these works stand as rare glimpses into the firm's visionary design approach. The unsigned boards include protective sheets and are presented in Very Good condition.
