Description

Wonderful World of Oz - Proposed Theme Park - Original "Wicked Witch's Castle Courtyard" Concept/Pitch Art Illustration by Eric Heschong for Landmark Entertainment (LEG, 1999). This original concept/pitch artwork was created by Landmark Entertainment Group for the ambitious late-1990s proposal Wonderful World of Oz, a theme park based on the beloved 1939 MGM classic. Rendered in gouache on 23" x 17.5" illustration board by acclaimed artist Eric Heschong, the piece vividly depicts the Wicked Witch's Castle courtyard. The design features the dramatic entrance to the "Winged Monkeys" attraction alongside a central performance stage, capturing Landmark's cinematic approach to themed environments. Between 1998 and 1999, Landmark prepared the full creative vision for Wonderful World of Oz, producing a master plan that included Munchkinland, the Yellow Brick Road, the Wicked Witch's Castle, and the Emerald City. Their pitch called for immersive rides, walkthroughs, live entertainment, themed dining, and retail, all inspired by the story's iconic characters and locations. Eric Heschong (1950-2013) was a master illustrator whose richly detailed gouache renderings helped visualize Landmark's boldest projects. His career spanned animation with Hanna-Barbera, scenery painting at CBS, and concept work for Universal and Walt Disney Imagineering. This rare Heschong original serves as a striking artifact of a never-built Landmark vision. In Very Good condition with smudging in the margins.
