    Description

UPA Studios Concept Paintings Group of 3, Bob "Yoshi" Inman (UPA, c. 1960s) Take a trip around the world and through history with these three gorgeous small-scale concept paintings. Long-time UPA background artist Bob "Yoshi" Inman has lent his distinctive modernist style to three of these exploratory pieces. All three pieces are comprised of backgrounds done on illustration board with characters painted on cels, overlaid and affixed. Each is in a slightly different style, the first two are strongly influenced by the art of the periods in which they are set. The first is set in ancient Sumer and depicts a fisherman and a ruler with a scepter, who are just moments away from having an argument. The style mimics closely the look of a Sumerian painting and uses a muted color palette and textured paint effects to suggest age and the look of stone. The second is an elegant depiction of a Japanese noblewoman in Old Japan. She strolls through a warmly-colored afternoon landscape, near a brook with rock formations, pine trees, and ivy. She is garbed in a bright pink kimono and holds a parasol up to the sun. The piece has the look and feel of classically-styled Japanese painting, especially apparent in the line-work and the ripples in the stream. The third has a distinctly contemporary feel to it. It looks to be a depiction of a seaside town in the middle east. Adobe buildings, palm trees, merchants, and beasts-of-burden fill out the panorama. This one is unusual in that all characters and all line work are on the overlaid cel. All three are mounted to a large piece of matt board, the three matt openings measure 11.5" x 4.5" each. The reverse of each reads "UPA" in graphite. In Fine condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
