Description
TV Guide Bullwinkle Article Preliminary Illustrations with Printed Magazine Group of 4 (Jay Ward/TV Guide, 1963). This lot is a real hoot, Jay Ward fans! Jay's troubles with NBC provides folly for an article in TV Guide that goes into detail regarding the problems the network had and mentions the "pull the knobs off the set" gag that resulted in 20,000 youngsters removing the old rotary-style channel selectors from their parents' television sets. The article features a two-page spread illustration and offered in this lot is the original preliminary sketch. It is rendered in graphite and blue pencil on onionskin paper, with an approximate image size of 15" x 6.25". It is the work of color stylist Sam Clayberger (1926 - 2018) who also created backgrounds, and promotional art for the Rocky and Bullwinkle shows from 1959 to 1984. A copy of the TV Guide (Los Angeles edition) for the week of March 30 - April 5, 1963 which contains the article also comes with the illustration. The first two pages of the main article with the illustration have come loose but are included. The article also features a fun April Fool parody of TV guide with Bullwinkle on the cover. Also included in this lot is a wonderfully detailed pan background layout drawing from Sam that pokes fun at NBC, showing an "MBC Television Network" building, and has various numbers and directions along the bottom peghole area indication it may have been used for pre-production. The graphite with blue pencil highlights and red pencil guidelines drawing is on paper measuring 39" x 10.25". The condition is Fair to Good for the TV Guide; Good to Very Good with some handling and age-related paper toning for the two drawings.From the Archive of Sam Clayberger and Michael Kadin.
