Description

Tom Wood Good Housekeeping "Don Donald" Daisy Duck, Donald Duck, and Jenny the Burro Original Publicity Drawing (Walt Disney, 1937). "He rode his burro all the way to visit Donna Duck". Don Donald was Daisy (then called Donna Duck) and Donald's first time meeting, and their feelings for each other are as clear as day in Tom Wood's stellar 12 field original publicity drawing! Originally debuting with Mickey's face preceding the title card, this Ben Sharpsteen-directed short would be the first installment in Donald's own series premiering on January 9, 1937, with unparalleled voice work of Clarence "Ducky" Nash for both Donald and Donna. Donald strummed a beat adapted from real-world Mexican folk songs, trying to get Donna's attention while Jenny the Burro grew more and more jealous. Tom Wood (1887 - 1940) started in Disney's Publicity Art Department in 1932 and became the head of the department by the next year, creating work for theatrical posters and later for the popular magazine Good Housekeeping from 1934 to his passing in 1940. The publicity art in this lot is believed to have been created as a preliminary drawing for his page on the short in Good Housekeeping (with prints of the published page and cover of the book Walt Disney's Mickey Mickey and the Gang Classic Stories in Verse included as reference) and shows Wood's knack for bringing Disney's characters to life in laugh-out-loud scenarios. Jenny is caught in the middle, as illustrated in the 4.5'' x 7.5'' drawing, but tries to make the best of it. Very Good condition with light edge and handling wear and faint age-related toning.
