DescriptionThe Thief and the Cobbler Phido and Zig Zag Concept Sketches and Book Group of 5 (Richard Williams, 1970's/'80s). Richard Williams' Magnum Opus The Thief and the Cobbler was in production for over 40 years and there is a 2012 documentary about the making of this film called The Greatest Animated Film Never Made. Art Babbitt began working with Richard Williams on this in the 1970s and continued with it for years. One of the characters he was heavily involved with was Phido the Vulture. This lot is an amazing character study of Phido drawn over a series of small thumbnail sketches. Also, in this lot are three huge pages of thumbnail sketches by Art Babbitt of the Phido with Zig Zag the Grand Vizier. In all there are 78 thumbnail sketches, taped to 20" x 15" board. It's amazing look into Art Babbitt's work on this unmade classic film. Also, in this lot is a First Edition of Richard Williams' book, The Animators Survival Kit which is dedicated to Art Babbitt's wife Barbera on the inside. A note from Richard Williams on the book is also included. This is a telling group of items that expose the close relationship between Art Babbitt and Richard Williams. The artwork has tape, handling and edge wear. Condition for the lot is Good. From the Art Babbit Archives.
