The Reluctant Dragon Sir Giles Character Development Drawings by Fred Moore Group of 3 (Walt Disney, 1941). Here are three pages of rare concept drawings by Fred Moore from one of Disney's most unusual feature films, which starts out as a tour of the Disney Studios. The tour stars droll radio comedian and author Robert Benchley, who comes to Disney in order to sell the rights to Kenneth Grahame's book The Reluctant Dragon as an animated film. Also included in this compilation are animated segments featuring Casey Junior (from Dumbo), Baby Weems, and Goofy. The longest animated segment is the adaptation of the book, which tells the story of a young boy who encounters a peaceful, poetry spouting dragon and the over-the-hill dragon slayer, Sir Giles. These drawings were made in preparation for this segment. The first shows a pen and ink drawing of a naked Giles, revealing how thin and frail he's become. The figure size is 7". The second page has two sketches of Giles in black Conte crayon; this time he's wearing his armor, and looks ready to tackle the dragon; figure sizes are 7.25" and 6.5". The third and final sheet has three very loose sketches of Giles in red pencil, with figure sizes of 6", 5.75", and 5.5". All are interesting pieces of artwork from one of Disney's most talented artists, Freddy Moore (who also appeared in the live action portion of the film). The art is in Good condition with handling wear, paper toning, and a small burn stain (away from the image) on the first piece.
